How fit do I need to be?

There is no doubt about it, any of our Himalaya Challenges require a good level of fitness, physical & emotional strength, and stamina. We don't prescribe a particular training plan, but it is important that you are prepared. As a base-level, before you go, you need to comfortable trekking for up to 8 hours a day while carrying a backpack weighing 5 - 10kg. If you can do this for sevreal days in a row, you have the basic fitness levels required. 

Our more advanced Himalayan Challenges, Mera Peak & Stok Kangri, will require a very good level of aerobic & anaerobic fitness and functional strength. 

Your training should incorporate aerobic, anaerobic, strength and flexibility excercises. Most importantly, you should get in some good hill walking, in the boots you are going to be wearing on the challenge.

Are there any training days / weekends?

Yes! We have a number of pre-challenge Training Days in London and the North & South Downs, and Weekends in the Peak District, Snowdonia and the Breacon Beacons spread across the year, from early Spring until September - so there should be a weekend to suit you.

Our training weekends are the best way to prepare yourself physically and mentally prior to tackling your challenge, and they are a great way to meet other trekkers, the Action Challenge team and our fully qualified Mountain Leaders. They're also a brilliant excuse to also test out your kit and equipment, against the elements!

Do I need a visa / vaccinations / insurance?

Visa - The answer is yes, all UK, Irish and US nationals require a visa for travel to Bhutan, India or Nepal. In almost all cases, this needs to be obtained prior to your challenge departure. If you hold a different passport to those mentioned, please check the relevant country's High Commission website for more information.

Vaccinations - Some regions close to the Himlayas are at risk of malaraia, however none of the routes we use are. If you plan to travel after your Himalayas Challenge, please check the NHS Fit For Travel website for more infomation. 

Insurance - Insurance is imperative and should cover the costs of medical repatriation, trip curtailment costs and trekking up to 6,000m (above 6000m for Stok Kangri & Mera Peak). We recommend you obtain insurance as soon as possible to cover any unexpected cancellations due to illness or injury.

Life on the trek

How big is the group? / What support will there be?

Our Himalayas Challenge groups vary in size. Everest Base Camp is our most popular challenge, and wil generally have larger teams of between 15 and 25, except on Everest Deluxe Challenges, which are capped at 12 people. Our other challenges will be between 10 - 15 people in most cases

We welcome individuals, couples and groups of friends on to our challenges, and many who join us literally have a mountain to climb in terms of the scale of the challenge they are taking on. We advocate camaraderie and team bonding, and really believe that this enhances your experience.

Your challenge will be led by an experienced Action Challenge leader. Our leaders are selected for their experience, knowledge, enthusiasm, sensitivity and sense of humour. They will ensure that your challenge runs smoothly.

You will also be accompanied by an Action Challenge doctor, who will be carrying a fully stocked medical kit in case of any emergency. They will carry out daily health checks, and the reassurance of their presence should allow you to focus on, and enjoy your challenge!

We have a full support team in country with two way radio contact - and between the Action Challenge Head Quarters in London and local staff by satellite phone for emergencies. If for any reason you need to leave the group early, local staff will assist you and will help arrange transfers, accommodation and medical care if necessary.

What is the weather like in the Himalayas?

The Himalayas are a mountainous region, and as such the weather can be unpredictable. We avoid running treks during the rainy season across all of our challenges, and during the winter months as it can become extremely cold at altitude. 

We focus our treks on two main seasons across the Himalayas - Autumn and Spring. 

Autumn is the most popular time to trek in the Himalayas. You are more likely to encounter clear skies and views of the great peaks. Temperatures will be moderate, making for pleasant trekking conditions. There may be short rain or snow storms, but on the whole you can expect good conditions. 

Spring is our favourite time to trek the Himalayas, especially in Nepal. You will be treated to the spectacle of blossoming rhododendrons and other flowers at this time. It will be colder than the autumn months, so be prepared to wrap up warm while trekking and at night in the teahouses or in camp, but the reward for this will be quieter trails and spectacular mountain views all around. 

Summer the only challenge we run over summer months is Stok Kangri. Due to its location, Stok Kangri has the best conditions for climbing between June & August. We run "shoulder" month trips in May & October, that will see colder conditions also. 

What will the food & accommodation be like?

We are real foodies at Action Challenge and whilst we cannot promise a gastronomic feast on your challenge, we do ensure there is plenty of food which is varied and wholesome. Depending on your chosen challenge, meals will be served either at camp or in teahouses. Breakfast is usually a hot drink with bread/ toast and spreads, porridge, eggs and sausage. Lunch will be eaten on the trail, and can vary from soups, stews and salads, to local delicacies. Evening meals will be filling and full of protein, carbohydrates and will deliver lots of calories! At altitude your body needs to take in around 4000 calories a day, so we make sure you are well fed. It's not uncommon for people to come back from a challenge having gained a few pounds.

We recommend that participants pack some of their favourite snacks to enjoy throughout the day. Action Challenge tip: Pack some ginger biscuits or some ginger tea as this is a fantastic natural remedy for nausea, a symptom of altitude sickness. 

When we are not trekking, our life in the Himalayas is spent at camp or in a teahouse. Here you can stay warm, chat with fellow team-mates, and plan the next day's activities with the challenge leader. Accommodation in the Himalayas is generally simple & basic - it's difficult to get life's modern conveniences to one of the most remote parts of the world! Expect basic but clean rooms, simple facilities and a warm welcome. The exception to this is our Everest Deluxe Challenge. Here you can expect an upgraded experience with exclusive access to the high-end lodges during teh early days of the trek, with extra bedding and equipment provided on the later days in more remote teahouses. 

In Nepal teahouses, showers will be available. Water and electricity can be scarce resources in the Himalayas, so the families who run teahouses need to charge a small fee to provide this service. Expect to pay between 200 & 600 Nepalese rupees for this service (£1.50 - £4).

Where do flights depart from?

All flights depart from London and are inclusive in your package. 

Can I book my own flights?

Yes, you can book a land-only package for a reduced rate. Land -only prices are listed under each challenge's Dates & Prices page. Please contact us for more information if you are looking to book your own flights.

You will be required to arrange all flights and transfers in order to meet the group at the starting hotel on day 2 of your challenge - and Action Challenge will require details of your travel arrangements before departure.

Please note you are unable to change your package once final balance invoicing has been completed and tickets have been issued by the airline.

Can I extend my trip or amend my return flight home?

If you would like to extend your trip it is absolutely possible. We offer extension packages for some challenges, To find out more, please email flights@actionchallenge.com and a member of the team will be in touch!

Funding & fundraising

How can I fund this challenge?

You can choose to fully fund the challenge yourself, fundraise for a charity of your choice (from which a minimum of 50% of the sponsorship will cover your trip cost), or opt to do a mixture of both! For all three funding options, an online registration deposit is required to secure your place. Please check the Dates & Prices page of your preferred challenge for the exact prices & fundraising targets. 

We have worked with over 200 UK charities and welcome partnerships with new ones all the time! As long as they are a registered UK or Irish charity and agree to you doing so, we are more than happy for you to fundraise for any charity close to your heart.

How do I sign up to a Himalayas Challenge?

To secure your place on a Himalayas Challenge departure, please click on the BOOK NOW button on the Dates & Prices Page. Please ensure you have a credit or debit card with you to pay your registration deposit. You will also need to have the below information to hand:

• Telephone Number
• Date of Birth

Before you embark on your challenge, we will need your passport, travel insurance, next of kin, medical details and dietary requirements (if applicable). If you have any medical conditions to declare or are over the age of 65, you will be required to complete a medical declaration form, signed and stamped by your GP. If you don’t have all this information to hand, you can still register your place today, and then submit the additional details at a later date.
